Frequently Asked Questions
Your Questions Answered — So You Can Focus on Your Wedding Day
Planning a wedding comes with a lot of questions. Your ceremony shouldn't be one of the things keeping you up at night.
At Signature Officiant Services, my role goes beyond simply showing up on your wedding day and performing your ceremony. I'm here to guide you through the process, explain what you need, help you make decisions and create a ceremony that feels comfortable, meaningful and completely yours.
From our first conversation to the moment I pronounce you married, my goal is simple: you enjoy the moment, and I'll help you navigate the ceremony.
Getting Started
When should we book our wedding officiant?
Once you have your date and location, your officiant should be one of the first wedding professionals you contact.
Your officiant plays an important role not only on your wedding day, but in the months leading up to it. Booking early gives us time to get to know one another, talk about your vision and create a ceremony that truly reflects you.
Popular dates can fill quickly, but don't hesitate to reach out if your wedding is coming up soon. If I'm available, I'll be happy to help.
What happens after we book you?
This is where the fun begins!
We'll meet so I can learn about the two of you—how you met, what you love about one another, your personalities, your favourite memories and what you envision for your ceremony.
I'll guide you through your ceremony choices and answer your questions along the way. You don't need to arrive knowing exactly what you want. That's part of what I'm here for.
Together, we'll create a ceremony that feels natural, personal and authentically you.
We've never planned a ceremony before. Will you help us?
Absolutely—and most couples haven't!
You don't need to know how a wedding ceremony is supposed to flow, when everyone stands, where vows belong or what happens with the rings.
I'll walk you through it.
My goal is for you to arrive at your wedding knowing what to expect so that when the ceremony begins, you can stop worrying about what comes next and simply be present.
Creating Your Ceremony
Will our ceremony be personalized?
Absolutely.
Your relationship isn't identical to anyone else's, so your ceremony shouldn't be either.
I take the time to learn about your relationship and weave pieces of your story, personalities and journey together into your ceremony.
It can be romantic, meaningful, light-hearted, funny or a combination of all of those things.
The goal is for your guests to listen and think:
“That is so them.”
Can we write our own vows?
Of course.
You can write completely personal vows, choose more traditional vows, use options I provide or combine different approaches.
And if you're staring at a blank page thinking, “I have absolutely no idea what to say,” don't worry. I can help guide you through the process.
Do we have to memorize our vows?
No.
Your wedding ceremony is not a memory test.
We can arrange your vows in a way that allows you to focus on one another rather than worrying about remembering every word.
Can our ceremony have some humour?
Please!
A wedding ceremony can be meaningful and romantic without being overly serious.
If humour is part of who you are as a couple, it belongs in your ceremony. We'll find the balance that feels right for you.
Can we include children or family members?
Absolutely.
There are many beautiful ways to involve children, parents, grandparents or other people who are important to you.
We can discuss what feels natural and meaningful for your family.
Can we include a reading, poem or unity ceremony?
Yes.
Readings, music, family traditions, unity ceremonies and other meaningful elements can all be incorporated.
I'll help you decide where they fit naturally so your ceremony flows beautifully.
Inclusivity & Ceremony Style
Do you perform LGBTQ+ weddings?
Absolutely.
Signature Officiant Services is fully inclusive.
Every couple deserves to stand in front of the people they love and feel welcomed, respected and celebrated.
Your ceremony will reflect your relationship, your language and your story.
Can our ceremony be bilingual?
Oui! Absolutely.
Your ceremony can incorporate both English and French.
We can create a bilingual ceremony in a way that feels natural for you and your guests rather than simply repeating the entire ceremony twice.
Do you perform non-religious weddings?
Yes.
Your ceremony can be secular, spiritual, traditional or include religious or cultural elements that are meaningful to you.
There isn't one “right” way to create a wedding ceremony.
There is simply the way that feels right for you.
The Legal Side of Getting Married in Ontario
Are you legally authorized to perform marriages in Ontario?
Yes.
As your officiant, I ensure that the ceremony includes the elements required for your marriage to be legally solemnized in Ontario.
The legal requirements are important—but they don't have to make your ceremony sound cold or impersonal.
We'll take care of what Ontario law requires while surrounding those elements with a ceremony that reflects who you are.
Do we need a marriage licence?
In most circumstances, yes.
You are responsible for obtaining a valid Ontario marriage licence before your ceremony and bringing it with you as arranged.
An Ontario marriage licence is generally valid for three months from the date it is issued, so timing is important.
I'll remind you about the licence during the planning process so it doesn't become a last-minute surprise.
Do we need witnesses?
Yes.
Ontario requires at least two witnesses to be present for the marriage.
Your witnesses will also sign the required marriage documentation.
If you're planning a very small elopement and aren't sure how to handle witnesses, talk to me when you're planning your ceremony.
Are there specific words we legally have to say?
Ontario law contains required declarations for marriages solemnized under the civil-marriage provisions of the Marriage Act.
Don't worry—you don't need to memorize the legal wording or figure out where it belongs.
That's my job.
I'll guide you through the required portions at the appropriate time while making them feel like a natural part of your ceremony.
Who looks after the marriage paperwork after the ceremony?
I'll guide you through the signing immediately following your ceremony and make sure the required portions are completed.
As the officiant, I then submit the completed marriage documentation for registration in Ontario.
That's one less thing for you to worry about after the wedding.
Is the Record of Solemnization our official marriage certificate?
No.
The Record of Solemnization you receive at your wedding is not the same as the official Ontario marriage certificate.
After your marriage has been registered, you can order your official marriage certificate through the Province of Ontario.
Your official marriage certificate may be required for things such as changing your name or providing legal proof of your marriage.
Your Wedding Day
What happens if we're nervous?
You probably will be—and that's completely normal.
There may be butterflies, happy tears, shaky hands and moments when you forget what you're supposed to do.
You don't have to remember everything.
Look at each other. Enjoy your moment. I'll guide you through the rest.
What if one of us cries?
Then we give you a moment.
There is no rush.
Some of the most beautiful moments in a ceremony happen when couples allow themselves to actually feel what is happening.
Your ceremony isn't a performance. It's your wedding.
What if we make a mistake?
Then we smile and carry on.
There are very few actual “mistakes” in a wedding ceremony.
A forgotten word, putting the ring on the wrong finger, laughing at an unexpected moment or getting emotional isn't going to ruin your ceremony.
Often, those become the moments you remember most.
What if we're running late?
Wedding days don't always run exactly according to schedule.
Communication is important, so if something unexpected happens, make sure I or your designated wedding-day contact knows.
We'll work together to keep things moving as smoothly as possible.
Do you attend rehearsals?
A rehearsal can be added when needed.
Not every wedding requires one, so we can talk about your venue, wedding party and ceremony plans and decide whether a rehearsal would be beneficial.
Elopements & Smaller Ceremonies
Do you perform elopements?
Yes!
A small wedding doesn't mean an unimportant wedding.
Whether you're surrounded by 150 guests or standing together with just your witnesses, you're still getting married—and that moment deserves to feel special.
Can we have a simple legal ceremony?
Absolutely.
Some couples want the complete personalized wedding ceremony, while others simply want something intimate and straightforward.
I'll help you understand what is legally required and create an option that works for you.
Other Ceremonies
Do you perform vow renewals?
Yes.
Whether you're celebrating a milestone anniversary, honouring everything you've experienced together or simply wanting to say “I'd choose you all over again,” a vow renewal can be a beautiful way to celebrate your marriage.
Do you offer ceremonies other than weddings?
Yes.
Signature Officiant Services also offers meaningful ceremonies for other important moments in life, including vow renewals, baby naming ceremonies and celebrations of life.
Each ceremony is created with the same care, compassion and attention to the people and stories involved.
The Question Couples Sometimes Forget to Ask
How do we know if you're the right officiant for us?
Your officiant will stand beside you during one of the biggest moments of your wedding day.
You should feel comfortable with that person.
You should be able to laugh with them, ask questions, share your story and trust them to guide you when you're standing in front of everyone you love with your heart beating a little faster than usual.
That's why getting to know my couples matters to me.
I don't simply want to know when and where you're getting married.
I want to know who I'm marrying.
Your ceremony should feel like someone who knows you is standing there telling your story—not someone reading a script they've read a hundred times before.
Still Have Questions?
Good!
There really is no such thing as a silly wedding ceremony question.
Whether you're wondering about your marriage licence, vows, witnesses, ceremony wording, processional, rings, family involvement or something completely unique that you'd like to include, ask me.
My role is to make this part of wedding planning easier.
You've already made the biggest decision—you've chosen each other.
Now let's create the moment when you get to say “I do.”
